The Dahlia Flower
We
go on a bit about Dahlias at Miss Moss Florals and for good reason. Originating
from Mexico, they were first cultivated by the Aztecs.. an impressive
history!
Dahlias need lots of good full sun and a well drained soil.. and staking! They
grow really tall and will fall over with the slightest breath of wind if not
staked properly when small.
During their season, Dahlias will feature in most of our bouquets and are extremely Instagramable, coming in a seemingly endless range of shapes, sizes and colours. They are definitely a florist’s favourite.
Dahlias have a reputation for not being the longest lasting bloom in a vase, once cut. Here are a few tips that might extend their life for 2-3 days longer.
- Always cut any flower stem on an angle to maximise water uptake.
- Steep stem ends in a few cm of hot water (not boiling) for about an hour, until the water cools
- Remove all leaves except for the top few to maximise water uptake to the flower head and so there are no leaves sitting below the water line in your vase.
Always keep cut flowers in a cool area of the house out of direct sun and wind, including air conditioning. Change the water in your vase every few days to avoid bacteria and therefore stop the water from smelling like a stagnant pond. Trust me, your flowers will enjoy it even less than you do and it will extend their vase life even further.
Then, all you need to do is enjoy this wondrous cut flower in all its glory!
There
are so many blooms in season at the moment, we are spoilt for choice especially
with Australian natives making their way back into the market.. but more of
that later..
