MOTHER’S DAY IS COMING!

Its here! Mother’s Day, the one day of the year your mum will never let you forget, aside from her birthday and the day you did something embarrassing at a family function that one time. Our mums and mother figures play a huge role in our lives, and so it makes sense that there is a national holiday dedicated to the celebration of motherhood. So where did this all start?

According to history.com, mothers day began with Ann Reeves Jarvis in the US. Attempting to promote peace during the civil war era, Jarvis (who had previously started ‘Mother’s Day Work Clubs to help women learn child rearing skills) proclaimed for mothers to stand united alongside Union and Confederate soldiers and call for reconciliation. Along with the added voice of Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist based in Michigan, there began a campaign to celebrate a ‘Mother’s Peace Day’ every June second.

However, it was Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, who made the final push for Mother’s Day to become a national holiday, wanting to honour her mother and the sacrifices she made for her children. With the financial backing of John Wanamaker, a department store owner, she held the first Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist Church in Grafton (which also saw thousands flocking to a similar event hosted at said department store). After many a letter writing campaign, President Woodrow Wilson declared that every second Sunday in May would be now celebrated on the national calendar as Mother’s Day. Now the rest is history!

In more modern times, Mother’s Day is celebrated as a way to make all the mums around the world feel special, typically with traditional flowers or chocolates. Others like to organise special mothers day brunches, dinners, or activities. However you choose to celebrate this day, the important thing is that mum’s everywhere get the recognition they truly deserve.
